NEMA and IEC Ratings for Suitable Installation Conditions
Mechanical casings and electrical enclosures standards like the International Electrotechnical Commission ( IEC ) Ingress Protection ( IP ) rating or National Electrical Manufacturers Association( NEMA ) enclosure type rating was developed to provide users a definition and more detail than vague terms like “ water resistant ”, “ watertight enclosure ” or “dust protection”, “solid particle enclosure”.NEMA Enclosure Type for dust rating and water rating, is not a direct equivalent to IP rating system but there are similar equivalencies between ratings.This table was made to show where each of the two different rating systems between their respective dust/particle protection and the liquid ingress protection requirements intersect. This can give the user an idea of what protection level their fixture has whether they are familiar with either the NEMA rating or the IP rating.
